This is the Swinney House, home of Edward Fletcher Swinney (1857-1946). Built in 1890 for under $50,000, Edward shared the home with his wife, Ida Lee, and the couple’s two adopted children, Edna and Lee.

Mr. Swinney was a prominent businessman and banker serving as president of the American Bankers Association and later as president of the First National Bank of Kansas City which is now a part of the Bank of America. He served on the Kansas City School Board and was a philanthropist responsible for the building of the Swinney Recreation Center and many more structures bearing the Swinney name.

Edward did not always have wealth. He graduated from university with a degree in banking, then got a job as a grocery delivery boy, working long hours for $20 a week. After about five years at the grocery, he was hired at a dry goods store where he received a $5 raise. Despite his humble beginnings, he kept a positive attitude and developed a work ethic that would attribute to his future successes.
